The state of Texas has been pretty good to Villanova over the past 3 years. From a buzzer beating 3 pointer to defeat UNC in 2016 to raining 3’s from everywhere to beat Michigan by 19, there is no hotter place to be a sports fan than the city of Philadelphia. But how did they make this latest championship look so simple. Well here is how it went.
Weather the Early Storm.
This did not look like a blowout in the first ten minutes of the game. Michigan came out like a ball of fire in the first part of the first half and took and early 11-8 lead. Villanova started out 1-9 from the three-point line and this looked like it was going to be a rough and tumble road to another national championship. At least until the second part of the first half.
Donte DiVincenzo Enters the Game
If you wanna talk about the best player in this National Championship game, you wouldn’t start with Brunson, Wagner, or Spellman. You would begin that conversation with Donte DiVincenzo. The 6th man of the year in the Big East Conference comes off the bench to have himself one of the most outstanding performances in National Championship game history. He had 2 runs where he scored Villanova’s last 9 or more points and ended the game with 31 points. With all of the star talent on the court, the young man from Wilmington Delaware made his spot in history known.
The 3 Finally Started Falling
As I mentioned earlier, Villanova Started 1-9 from beyond the arc, well they finished 10-27. It is not the eye-popping performance from their game against Kansas, but every time Michigan started making a run, a huge 3 would fall and make the game seem that much further away for the Wolverines, who were 3-23 from beyond the arc.
Wagner Was Not a Factor
It might seem crazy to say that a player with 16 points and 7 boards was not a factor in the game, but after the first 10 minutes of the game, he seemed non-existent for the last 30 minutes of the contest. He was plagued by foul trouble the majority of the second half after picking up a technical foul. Michigan needed the big man to step up huge in this contest, but it was not to be on this night.
Overall a fantastic tournament for the Villanova Wildcats. They did not win a game by less than single digits throughout the entire NCAA Tournament. This might not be the most star-studded team in the country, but this team will be just as dangerous next year as it was this year.
